Conversation with Bis

Conversation with Bis (my daughter):

Bis: Why does it have to be so hot in the summer every day?

Me: Well, the earth is titlted  by about 26 degrees, honey.  So, as it travels around the sun, it has parts of the year when our continent is pointed more directly at the sun.  These times are warmer than the times when it’s not as directly pointed at the sun.

Bis: But why does it have to be so hot in the summer every day?

Me: The plants need it to be hot to grow.  Do you know that in the winter the plants go to sleep and don’t grow because it’s cold, but when it starts to warm up in the spring and then get hot in the summer the plants start to grow.  Have you noticed that?

Bis: Yes.

Me: So that’s why it has to be hot in the summer, so that things will grow…God has it planned that way.

Bis: Oh. OK.

God to me: The same is true in your life, Jim.  The times of heat are the times of growth.  It’s hot, but you’ll grow.

Me: Oh. OK.
